How to Add Mods to Project Zomboid

Add Steam Workshop or manual mods to a new or existing Project Zomboid save without confusing subscriptions with save-specific activation.

Add a Workshop mod

  1. Check the Workshop description for supported builds, required items, incompatibilities, and whether a new save is required.
  2. Subscribe to the main mod and every required item, then wait for Steam’s downloads to finish.
  3. Restart Project Zomboid and open the Mods menu.
  4. For a new game, enable the mod before creating the world. For an existing game, choose Load, select the save, open More or its Mods options, and enable it there.
  5. Load the world and verify one feature the author describes.

Add a manual mod

Extract the real mod folder into Zomboid/mods in your user folder. The folder must contain a valid mod.info and media structure, or the Build 42 versioned structure supplied by the author. Do not place the archive itself in the mods folder.

If it appears enabled but does nothing

Confirm the mod is enabled for that world, review console.txt for missing dependencies, and test it on a fresh save. The Workshop description is the authority for whether its content can be added mid-save.
